Text Box: A Welcome from our Vicar
If you are visiting, ‘testing your toes in the water’ of this parish church, or planning to make a long-term commitment to St Mary the Virgin, Illingworth – Welcome!
You might be wondering what sort of church this is as a building and as a body of people? Well, a quick look around our congregation on a Sunday morning will tell you that we are a pretty amazing and eclectic bunch!
People here are of a broad Anglican tradition, which we express in a kind of central-catholic way. “Kata-holos”— “together-ness” being our watchword.
“Respect” is also what makes a difference here, and our respect for one another's differences really does make us a pretty amazing bunch as together we attempt to know more of the nature of our God, through the Father, the Son and The Holy Spirit.
At St Mary’s, our worship is important to us and we try and offer thoughtful preaching and a wide range of music for people of all ages, combined with service to the wider community, but underpinning all that we do is a commitment to prayer and a belief that we should all have time to have fun! That’s the aim. Of course, we fall short of all these things but . . . we’re working at it!
As a church building, St Mary’s is at the beginning of what might stretch to three or four phases of long overdue building and refurbishment works. We believe that if we are to successfully re-launch our mission to our community, then a firm foundation is the only place to step forward from. The congregation have worked and played hard to raise money towards the project and as a result we have been awarded a substantial grant from English Heritage to begin that work. (Details of that work can be found elsewhere on this website.)
If you would like to join us in our journey of faith by worshipping with us or even contributing one of the gifts that God has, no doubt, blessed you with, again: Welcome! and, please don’t hesitate to talk to me or any member of our church if you have any queries.
The Reverend Keith Hanson
